Remember when we all used Snapchat to share our stories before Instagram swooped in and launched Stories?
Well, Instagram has now set its sights on long-form video.
With one billion active users on Instagram, IGTV is set to disrupt the mobile video world.
And with many creators complaining about YouTube’s “Adpocalypse” and their dwindling revenues, IGTV is poised to be the competition YouTube needs to take away its monopoly of the market.
First things first: What is IGTV?
IGTV is essentially Instagram’s version of Youtube.
Except ALL the videos are vertical.
It’s a smart move from the app, with 78% of all mobile data traffic predicted to come from mobile video by 2021.
At the moment, IGTV videos do have a time limit. All videos must be between 15 seconds to 10 minutes in length. But some larger accounts are now able to upload whopping one-hour vids.
Another thing to look forward to with IGTV is ads.
While there are none on IGTV at the moment, Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom has said that it’s in the cards for the future, and creators will be able to earn money.
That’s HUGE news because it will be another way to start making an income from your Instagram audience.
How to Set Up Your IGTV Channel
Before you can upload your first video to IGTV, you need to create your channel.
Step 1: Sign into your account and tap on the IGTV icon in the top right-hand corner.
Step 2: Tap the gear icon and select “Create Channel”.
Step 3: Follow the prompts on the screen, and now you’re ready to upload your first video!
How to Upload a Video to IGTV
Just like creating your channel, uploading your video to IGTV is a piece of cake.
Step 1: Tap on the IGTV icon from the main page.
Step 2: Tap your profile icon and then tap the “+” symbol.
Step 3: Upload a video from your camera roll.
Step 4: Enter a title and a description.
Make sure you squeeze in those keywords to help your target audience easily find your video. Plus you can add a link without having 10k followers!
Step 5: Add a cover photo
This is what viewers will first see when browsing the line up of videos. Think in terms of the ‘thumbnail’ of your video. You want to do your best to make sure it’s awesome, so it captures their attention.
Step 6: Post your video!
Step 7: View Your Analytics
To see your analytics, click the “…” button next to the like, comment and share buttons on your video.
From here, you’ll be able to tap on “View Insights” and see how well your video is performing.
What Kind of Videos Should You Post on IGTV?

Do your followers direct message you with a bunch of questions every day, week or month?
2. MAKE A FAQ VIDEO
Not only will you be able to help your current audience, you’ll also be able to save time and easily refer new followers to the video.
You can use IGTV to interview a client, an expert in your field or an influencer. It’s a simple way to create valuable content your audience will love.
4. PRODUCT DEMONSTRATIONS AND TUTORIALS
Do you know how to make the perfect fishtail braid or have a few Lightroom editing tricks? Teach your viewers your wise ways, Obi-Wan.
Bought any new products lately? Post a first impressions video and give an honest review.
The Technical Stuff
- Your videos need to be in MP4 file format.
- Make sure you record your video in vertical and not landscape.
- The optimal aspect ratio for IGTV videos is a minimum of 4:5 and a maximum of 9:16.
- The maximum file size is 650mb for 10 minutes.
Tips For Getting the Most Out of IGTV
1. IGTV IS NOT LIKE STORIES
Think of IGTV as an extension of your Instagram feed. You want people to keep coming back to watch your videos so you can grow your audience.
Keep your quick life updates and poor video quality for Instagram Stories.
You’ll have a much easier time growing on IGTV by posting one really great video per week that shows your audience how much value you can add to their lives.
2. JUMP ON THE TREND NOW
IGTV is a new feature which means there is less competition. Don’t waste time planning your first video and getting it out there.
