One question I get a lot from my fellow online business owners is,

“Elise, how do I get swipe up on Instagram Stories when I don’t have 10,000 followers yet?”

Now, as you probably know, when you see people saying in their Stories, “Swipe up,” what they’re doing is driving you to a link. Once you actually swipe up on Instagram Stories at the bottom of the screen, you’re going to be taken to that link.

This sexy feature is only available to you if you have an Instagram business account, and if you have 10,000 followers

Now, I know a lot of successful online business people who haven’t really focused on Instagram. They might have less than a thousand followers and yet they have a lot of content to share, like blog posts, videos, podcast episodes…

So here is my trick for online business owners to be able to get swipe up on Instagram stories, even without 10,000 followers.

1. Post to IGTV

The first step is you are going to utilize IGTV.

Pull up your phone and record a video. You can simply use the camera app on your phone, and make sure your video is at least 60 seconds long. With IGTV videos, they need to be at least 60 seconds and they can be up to 15 minutes when uploading from mobile, or up to 60 minutes when uploading from the web.

Make your video a call to action, or explain why they should care about what you’re promoting, whether it’s a new blog post, a podcast, a free masterclass, etc. Just give it at least 60 seconds and then save that video on your camera roll.

Then, what you’re going to do is open up your Instagram profile and then head on over to the IGTV area right under your bio.

Once you click into the IGTV part of your profile, you will see the plus (+) symbol which is where you’re going to add a new video. All the videos that are on your camera roll that are at least 60 seconds are going to pop up.

Select the video that you just filmed, hit ‘Next’, and then give it a title.

You want to make the title interesting and pique their curiosity. In the description, put the link you want to drive people to right at the very top. Consider adding an emoji as well to really draw attention to it.

If you like, you can go ahead and add a full description, but know that you don’t actually need one; just the title and link is fine.

As for a cover photo for your IGTV video, Instagram will automatically choose a thumbnail for you, but you can also choose an image from your camera roll or create something custom in Canva.

Now it’s time to hit post! After uploading, your IGTV library will update with your new video.

Where’s the link, you might ask? Well, just go to the top where your title is and when someone taps it and the description appears, there’s your link!

2. Add the video to your Stories

Now, how do we get this into your Stories? Just because you’ve published it on IGTV doesn’t mean that people are going to see it in your Stories.

Let the creativity continue. 😉

You’re going to go to your Instagram Story record a quick video letting people know to swipe up to get access to what it is you are offering.

For example, I would say:

“Hey, I’ve just released a brand new masterclass. It’s all about gaining your next 1,000 Instagram followers in 30 days. Make sure you swipe up to watch it.”

3. Adding a Swipe Up link to Instagram Story

Now, at the top of your screen, you will see a link symbol. Go ahead and tap on that link symbol, and you should see an option for IGTV video. Once you hit IGTV video – lo and behold – you will see the IGTV video you just uploaded.

Adding a URL to the Swipe Up link

So you can link to your IGTV video in your Insta Story, even without 10,000 followers.

Pretty cool, right?

I recommend adding some text to your Story, and you can even use a GIF that says ‘swipe up’ if you’d like.

Once you’ve got your Story ready to go, and once you’ve made sure that you’ve linked to your latest IGTV video, you’re going to share to your Story.

Here’s how it’s going to look:

At the very bottom you’re going to see ‘Watch Video’, and when someone swipes up, they will be brought to your latest IGTV video where you have added the link leading out to whatever you want to promote, whether it’s a masterclass, a webinar, a blog post, a podcast, all that great stuff.

And voilà, that is how you get swipe up on Instagram without 10k followers.

  1. Elise,

I really enjoy your videos for IG. When I watched this one, it didn’t work for me. However, today when I was posting a Story it let me Link to Products. Almost shouted aloud as I’ve less than 10k followers.

Anyway, searched to see if it’s a glitch or something new. But nothing found.

    Cheers,

  2. I have a question about your first step you noted-using IGTV. Sounds like you might have a verified account, because the regular peeps out there can only post a video that is between 15 seconds and 10 minutes on IGTV. Is there something I am missing? Would love to know if what you said is actually true, as we would love to post longer content on our brand’s IGTV!

    Thank you

    1. Hey Cassidy, I tested it out on a brand new IG account with zero followers, zero posts, zero everything. Once you have a IG Business acccount, not a personal account, you can then add a video straight from your phone. The video has to be over 60 seconds long to get the option to IG TV. That IG TV button you see in the tutorial doesn’t automatically pop up when you don’t have any IG TV videos already. So, once you have at least one video in your camera roll over 60 seconds, when you post to upload a video, it will ask you if this is a post or IG TV video. Then everything else is the same. Hope this helps!

  3. Got up to ‘Now, at the top of your screen, you will see a link symbol” there is no link at the top of the page if you don’t have 10k followers…?
